Pocatello - William "Bill" Joseph Terry, 84, lifelong resident of Pocatello, passed away peacefully at his home early Tuesday, April 26, 2011 surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
He was born March 3, 1927, in Pocatello, Idaho, a son of Joseph Algernon and Mary Elizabeth Byington Terry. He attended schools in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School where he excelled in sports including football, basketball, baseball and track. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific.
On January 17, 1946, he married Caralee Mangum in Pocatello, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized later that year in the Idaho Falls Temple. Bill worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 46 years retiring as a switchman. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church and had served in the Young Mens and Scouting. He also served as a ward clerk, temple committee chairman and building maintenance supervisor. He was an excellent carpenter and built 17 homes in Pocatello and the surrounding area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling and the out of doors. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Caralee Terry, Pocatello, Idaho, 2 sons, William Randell (Jean) Terry, Pocatello, Idaho; Ronald Alan Terry, Idaho Falls, Idaho; 2 daughters, Merri Jo (Jerry) Barnes, Pocatello, Idaho; Melody (Kevin) England, Chubbuck, Idaho; a sister, Wilma Jones, Pocatello, Idaho. 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Gloria Dawn Terry and a sister, Pat Otasua.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the L.D.S. Chapel on the corner of Butte and Hiskey Streets with Bishop Timothy Campbell, of the Highland First Ward officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello with military graveside rites provided by the Pocatello Veteran Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and Saturday from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
