Inkom - Vance H. Burrup, 83, longtime resident of Inkom, returned home to his Heavenly Father early Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at his home following a long and courageous battle with an extended illness.
He was born in Downey, Idaho on May 5, 1927. He was the third of five children born to Joseph Earl and Olive Vera Pratt Burrup. When he was approximately one year old, his family moved to the farm on Indian Creek Road in Inkom, Idaho, where he presently resided. He attended schools in Inkom, Idaho and graduated from Inkom High School in 1944 when he was 17 years of age. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1947 and was in Korea for 1 1/2 years. He was employed at Orange Transportation in Pocatello for a few years, but spent most of his life farming with his father and later with his son on Indian Creek Road in Inkom.
Vance married Claudine Morris in 1952 and were later divorced. He married Ruth Paul on March 22, 1968, and they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls L.D.S. Temple on January 16, 1988. Vance was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had served in the Sunday School Presidency and in the High Priest Group Leadership. He was a dependable Home Teacher for many years. Vance was also dependable in anything he was asked to do and could be counted on to assist anyone in need and never wanted any credit for helping someone else. He was a perfectionist in the things he did including farming.
Vance enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and used to have a deer hung before noon on the opening day of deer hunting season. He also liked to ride horses and raised one special colt named "Teardrop" and rode her for many years. Vance enjoyed elk hunting trips with friends where they would pack in and hunt for a week. He enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing and went on several ski week trips with friends to different ski areas. He and Ruth enjoyed round dancing and square dancing for over 20 years and made many friends while participating in that activity.
Vance loved his family more than anything else and was a great support to his children and grandchildren at their sporting events and other activities and traveled with them to those events. He enjoyed teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His grandchildren always received one of his "Safety Lectures" before leaving to travel anywhere. His advice to his children and grandchildren when they got married was "The hardest thing to do is to make ten easy payments a month" and he lived by that, also.
Vance is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; one son, Michael V. Burrup, Inkom, Idaho; two daughters, Vauna (Ralph) Wheatley, McCammon, Idaho; Shandell (Marshall) Baker, Sammamish, WA.; as well as 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren (one due in July) and his sister, Addie Wengreen (Jesse) Ogden, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Weldon (Lorraine), Glade (Wanda) and his sister Ludean.
Vance's family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice Alliance, Hospice Nurses Larry and Peter, Social Worker, Roberta, Chaplian, Danny, Teresa and Debbie and the entire staff. Vance will be greatly missed by his family and many friends who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Idaho Food Bank, the L.D.S. Perpetual Education Fund, the L.D.S. Missionary Fund or the charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Inkom L.D.S. Church (Rapid Creek Road) with Bishop Jeff Wright of the Skyline Ward officiating. Interment will be in the Inkom Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Inkom L.D.S. Church (Rapid Creek Road) and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
