Lowell Arden Hale passed quietly away on the evening of February 19, 2025 in Chubbuck, Idaho at the age of 87. He was born March 28, 1937 in a house on Reservation Road in Tyhee, Bannock County, Idaho to parents Arden Delos Hale and Rachel (Dye) Hale, and was their youngest son.
Lowell was known for his hard work ethic, his devoted faith, his intelligence and wisdom, his quietness and, especially as he got older, his gentle, kind and generous spirit. From the time he was a young child his happy place was sitting on and driving a tractor, which he was ably driving by the age of 5. He enjoyed singing and had a deep bass voice he used on the radio sometimes, in a part-time job during high school and in the Army as a radio operator.
Lowell attended local schools and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1955. After graduation he served for two years in the US Army. After his army service, Lowell served for two more years on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the West Central States Mission, mainly in Wyoming and North Dakota. Prior to his mission, he met lovely Alice Whiting, a friend of his younger sister Garda. Not long after his return, Alice and Lowell were married on January 15, 1960 in Idaho Falls. Their first two children, Cindy and Lane, born in 1960 and 1961, died unexpectedly in the fall of 1962. This was a great and pivotal time of trial for their little family. They were able to have eight more wonderful, intelligent children, despite medical challenges, and over the years they took in many other children in need of a place to stay. At one time the children in their home numbered 17.
For many years Lowell farmed grain, beets and dairy cattle and worked part-time as a Bannock County Sheriff Deputy. He also loved to fly and obtained a private pilot’s license. Many family members have memories of going up with him on short flights. When the time came to retire from farming Lowell worked for several more years in truck driving and security, including a dozen years or so as a fingerprinter for Homeland Security. He enjoyed flying, farming, leatherworking, Rubix cube puzzles, eating steak, and a good bowl of his homemade bread and milk. He offered uncountable hours of service in various Church service projects, mainly in food production, but in many other responsible positions over the years. He loved family history and serving in the Temple, documenting the names and lives of thousands of individuals over the years. That and making rockets with the Cub Scouts were probably his favorite service activities.
Lowell and Alice served a 2-year service mission for the Church in the Pocatello area, focused mainly in the Tyhee area, updating records and teaching and fellowshipping many individuals. Alice’s health began to decline in the early 2000s and in May 2008, she passed away in Emmett, Idaho. Not long afterward, Lowell met Cindy, a mother of five teen to college-age children. Though Cindy was nearly a quarter-century younger, they soon fell in love and enjoyed a happy sixteen-year marriage. Lowell helped raise the younger children and he and Cindy served together on another 18-month mission in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 2013-2014. They have enjoyed many good times, dampened only by Lowell’s declining health.
Lowell was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Alice Whiting Hale, his parents Arden and Rachel Hale and siblings Mathol, Delos, Joyce, Marilyn, Garth and Garda, two little children, Cindy and Lane, daughter Becky and great-granddaughter Allie Lynn. Lowell is survived by his wife Cindy of Chubbuck, daughters Ronda (Lee) Fisher of Glenns Ferry, Karen (Todd) Trumbull of Pocatello, Carlena Phillips (Eli Sanchez) of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, and Sandra Hale of Pocatello and sons Kelly (Joan) of Idaho Falls, Lance (Monique) of Boise, Rex (Kari) of St. George Utah, son-in-law Scott Armstrong of Ucon. Lowell is survived by and will be missed by grandchildren Jessica, Heidi, Levi, Emma, Kaley, Kasia, Ethan, Shanae, Rainy, Sarah, Jorja, Connor, Katria, Kyle, Jared, Caleb, Tanner, Andrea, Rachel, Megan, Elizabeth, Eric, Brandon, Joseph, Benjamin, Jacqueline, Jazmyne and great-grandchildren Paisley, Juniper, Malakai, Annie, Solomon, Jaidyn, Jaivry, Holland, Max, Theo, Quinn, Nwanne, Meka, Kasdyn, Jayden, Lydia, Chloe and Charlie. Lowell is survived by bonus children Lucinda (Chris) Hall of Highland, Utah, Sarah (Aaron) Ulrich of Warrenton, Oregon, Daniel (Natalie) Fenn of Davenport, Washington, Marilee (Henry) Zhu of Walnut Creek, California and William (Brooklyn) Fenn of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, along with their families, including 11 bonus grandchildren. Many others considered him a father figure, particularly foster daughters Sue Whiting, Laween, Fawnel and Juanita Jacobson.
Lowell’s was a life well-lived. He made the world a better place for having lived in it. The family is ever so grateful to the staff of Symbii Hospice and Brookdale Chubbuck Assisted Living facilities for their kind and competent care in Lowell’s time of need.
