Jean Pollard

Jean Pollard 85, passed away on April 8th, 2022 of natural causes, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born on Jan. 3, 1937, to Eskel and Viola Peterson in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Jean attended school at Horace Mann Jr. High and West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah  She grew up working in their family business. Her dad was an inventor and a very hard worker and had many things for her to do to help support their large family.  Besides helping her mom with the other children, she helped run the carnival rides her dad built and took around from city to city. She helped with the "live monkey" ride!  The monkeys would "drive" a little car around an oval track built at an angle so the cars really drove themselves and the monkeys held on for dear life!. The trick was to put enough gas in the carburetor so after a few rounds it would run out of gas making it look like the monkeys were actually driving the cars, all to the crowd's amazement! She also helped run their little train ride her dad built for the kids!. She loved the carnival time with her family but the "carny" life wasn't what her dad wanted. He didn't want his girls around that type of lifestyle. They then started "peddling" oranges and grapefruit with his Peterson brothers. She was always the "top salesman" (we all think because she was so cute...how could anyone turn her away!)
She loved her brothers and sisters! They were all so close to each other. They stayed in contact even up until she passed away.  She was preceded in death by her sisters Doris Ann, Bonnie, and Ileen. Her living sisters, Maurine and Ramay, and brothers Roy, Larry, Bud, and Paul have been so kind and loving to her throughout her life and they will miss her greatly too! She was such a happy and loving person...just ask those who knew her. Her laugh and smile were contagious.
She met the love of her life, Theron A. Pollard, at a church dance. After that night they knew they were meant to be together! They were married on June 1st, 1953, and moved to Arizona while Theron was in the Air Force. She gave birth to David in 1954 and shortly after they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple.  Debbie came 15 months later in 1955 at Luke Air Force Base while she lived in Arizona. After Theron got out of the Air Force in 1956 they moved to Salt Lake where Don was born in 1957. While in Salt Lake they managed and ran Theron's father's movie theatre in Draper Utah. They completely renovated the Theatre and worked hard to make it a success. No one outworked her!  She loved the movies!
She loved playing softball and going to dances with Theron at Mickey's in Salt Lake City. They then moved to a farm in Blackoot Idaho to work with her two sisters (Maurine and Doris Ann) who had married two Frandsen "farmer brothers". Theron and Jean worked on the farm for a short time before they started up their family promotional products advertising business, Tee Pee Advertising Co., and moved to 155 Taft Ave in Pocatello (where the business is still there to this day.) When they moved to Pocatello she helped Theron in their business and had three more children Dee in 1960, Diann in 1963, and Destry in 1968.  Because of Theron and Jean's belief in celestial marriage, Jean selected her sister Ileen to be a sister wife.  On January 7, 1962. Ileen joined the family. Ileen passed away in 2020. Jean was a second mother to Ileen's children; Nataleen (Kent) Johnson and their 13 children, Nathan (Cindy) Davis and their 6 children, April (Dan) Paulus and their 4 children, Darin (Lisa) Davis and their 7 children and Dolly (Elden) Stevens and their 11 children.  Theron made regular trips to Salt Lake to take care of his other family, while Jean managed things in Pocatello until her passing.  She loved being a mother! She understood each child and what they needed to get them through any tough time in their life.  She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until 1978.  Even though she was no longer a member she supported her children that were.
Through the business, she and Theron traveled the world. They went to Greece, Paris, China, Italy, Rio de Janeiro, Spain, Yugoslavia, Alaska, Sweden, and the Caribbean. She loved being active in her children's activities. She was always by their side working in the PTA at school, going to Little League ball games, and any church activities they were involved in. She loved being a camp leader to the girls in the old 5th Ward L.D.S. church on the corner of Elm and McKinley. The girls loved her too. She was so fun to be around and provided many hours of fun for them.
During the Christmas season, she was the sidekick of Santa Claus (who was Theron.) She played the role of "Elvie" the Elf and they both entertained hundreds of kids in the Pocatello area for years! One of her best friends was Arnetta Pincock, who drove a school bus for the Pocatello School District. Jean loved being picked up each morning by Arnetta in that big yellow bus and the two of them went to breakfast! What a dear friend she was!
In 1989 she helped Theron open their retail store, Westwood Discount, in the Westwood Mall. She worked in the store helping customers and Theron with inventory and taking care of the store for many years after working a full day at Tee Pee Advertising Co., where she kept the books and dealt with the customers and suppliers. She became good friends with many of those she worked with because of her kindness, sense of humor, smile, and laugh!
Her greatest joy was her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her so much pride and joy. She loved attending softball and baseball games, football, and soccer games, basketball games, dance recitals, music recitals, and the many theatrical shows her husband, children, and grandkids were part of. She was their biggest fan! She never missed a thing! She also loved taking the family to the old Sunset and Starlight Drive Inns movie theater!
Her greatest sorrow was when her son, Dee, passed away in 1998 due to complications from cancer. She was by his side through many years of treatments and the illness, never complaining, only serving him and loving him through his tough times. We know they are together in Heaven now making up for all those lost years!  This gives solace to all of us left behind knowing they are together along with her parents and siblings who have gone on before.
She had a strong belief in the Savior, Jesus Christ, and showed her love for Him through the many selfless acts of kindness she performed to her children and even strangers! She always taught us to help those in need! She was a listening ear to all of her family, always with good and sound advice. Everyone respected and followed her counsel and advice!
Theron and Jean were married for 69 years and had 6 children, David (Keva) 7 children, Debbie (Layce Whitworth) (Dave Strang) 6 children, Don (Brenda) 4 children, Dee, who passed away in 1998 (Mary 3) (Rosanna 3) 6 children  , Diann (Spencer Miller) 3 children, and Destry (Nannette) 6 children. She had 32 grandchildren and 76 great-grandchildren. She also had 42 grandchildren and 79 great grandchildren from Ileen.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed!
A Celebration of her life will be held on Mother's Day, May 8th at 4:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Bldg. at 300 North Johnson in Pocatello. We will be broadcasting the service if you can't attend.
