James Brett Dalley, age 64, passed away in his home on December 12, 2022. Jim was born in Driggs, Idaho on June 29, 1958 to Alvin and LaJean Dalley. He attended Teton High School, where he excelled in many sports and activities, including football and wrestling. After high school, he received a wrestling scholarship from Idaho State University, which he attended for a year before going on a mission to New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Upon completing his mission, Jim attended Ricks College where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree. Jim went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Idaho State University and a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Brigham Young University. In 2018, he completed a Master of Liberal Studies in Leadership through Fort Hayes State University. Jim was a life-long learner and had a passion for teaching about leadership and the gospel, and found joy in sharing his knowledge with others.
While attending Ricks College, Jim met the love of his life Ann Howard and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls temple on March 14, 1981. Jim and Ann went on to have five children whom he loved dearly. He was so proud of each of them and their accomplishments. Jim loved his family and the gospel and brought light and laughter to those with whom he interacted. He had a way of making people feel that they were loved, valued, and of great worth. Jim enjoyed riding his bike and motorcycle and going camping with his wife. He loved spending time with his family and supporting his grandchildren in their activities.
Jim started his 37-year-career in law enforcement in 1983 at Bannock County Sherriff’s Department, working in the detention center and moving through various departments and positions, including Patrol Captain, Jail Captain, Detective, School Resource Officer, SWAT Team Leader, and his final position as Chief Deputy. He loved the people he served with and was committed to servant-based leadership, inspiring those with whom he interacted to be the best version of themselves. Jim retired from Bannock County Sheriff’s Department on March 12, 2020.
Jim is survived by his wife Ann Dalley; his children and their spouses: Jaime-Ann (Rob) Spencer, Breck Dalley, Jeremy (Nicole) Dalley, Jon (Laura) Dalley, and Jara (Taylor) Ankrum; his fifteen grandchildren; and his siblings and their spouses: Greg (Barbara) Dalley, Lane (Toni) Dalley, Lisa (Pat) Field, and Doug (Jeanenne) Dalley. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and LaJean Dalley and his wife’s parents Mervin and Erna Howard.
