Pocatello- Howard "Jack" Jackson Satterfield, 85, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2010 in Beatrice, Nebraska at the home of his loving son, Ron, where he had been living.
Jack was born April 24, 1925 in Pocatello, Idaho, to loving parents Ammon Y. and Jane Spence Satterfield. He was the 9th child of three brothers, Rulon, Charles, Homer and five sisters, Lucille, Ruby, Grace, Veda, Jean, who loved him dearly. He spent his entire life in Pocatello until his illness when he went to live with his son and family in California.
He was educated while attending Whittier Elementary, Franklin Junior High and Pocatello High School graduating in 1943. Jack was an excellent athlete and played at Pocatello High School on teams winning Idaho All State Champion Basketball and all State Champion Football, winning an athletic scholarship to Idaho State College for his ability.
Then we entered war in World War II and he chose to enter the Army Air Corps in 1943. Lieutenant Satterfield was trained in B17's and B29's as a navigator in his crew. He served until the war ended in 1945.
Jack returned to Pocatello to prepare for a mission for the L.D.S. Church. He was called to the Central States Mission with headquarters in Independence, Missouri. He served as the mission secretary and had many wonderful opportunities at that time. There he met the "love of his life", a lady missionary from California, Myrle Hardee. After his mission was completed, they married in the Idaho Falls Temple, Oct. 21,1949. They both resumed their education at B.Y.U. and I.S.U. where he graduated in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration. He joined the family business of Satterfield Realty and Insurance. There he was instrumental in establishing the Highland Golf Course, the Lava Golf Course. He worked to have homes in Pocatello area serving as Vice-President of Satterfield Realty and Pocatello Creek Development Company. His love of golf increased by the completion of the two golf courses. He became an excellent golfer and won many prizes and especially friends of the game.
Jack served in many positions in the L.D.S. Church, as a financial clerk, gospel doctrine teacher, as a councilor in the Alameda Stake Presidency and then Alameda Stake President. He was active in developing the Highland Stake and planned the mulit-region conference in the Holt Arena followed immediately by the multi Region Dance Festival. When he was released as the Stake President, he and his wife served in the Idaho Falls Temple for 12 years. Following the death of his beloved wife in 1995, he returned to serve another three years in the temple.
He is survived by his two sons, Ronald Jack (Cindy) Satterfield, Beatrice, Nebraska; Michael Paul Satterfield, of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Veda S. Anderson, Pocatello, Idaho; Jean S. Simpson, Pocatello, Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was the epitome of integrity all his life. He lived a good Christian life and was gentle and kind to everyone, including animals. His cheery disposition and sense of humor gained him many friends and the name of "Smiley". He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:00 at the Highland Stake Center (2140 Satterfield Drive) with Bishop Dan Ruth of the Highland 4th Ward officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 at the church. Interment will be in the Mountainview Cemetery,with military rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
