Chubbuck- Jack Deloy Landon, age 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away Friday, December 11, 2009 surrounded by his family at the Portneuf Medical Center East Campus. Jack was born to Frances Samuel and Eldora Mortenson Landon on November 24, 1927 in Kimball, Idaho. He was the youngest of four, with brothers, Reed, Ronald, and Max.
Jack spent his childhood in the Kimball-Firth areas. He attended schools in Firth and worked for a potato farmer until he later joined the Army and received his GED. He served 15 months in the Army and spent time overseas but was not allowed to join his fellow soldiers in combat during WWII because his older brother Ron had recently been killed in the line of duty.
After serving, he attended school to become an electrician and later worked as an apprentice for the Union Pacific Railroad until 1957. Following the railroad, he went to work at INEL where he worked his way up from a laborer to a certified pipefitter. He retired in 1991 after 34 years at the site.
On September 23, 1949, he married Hattie Fay Dye in Lower Presto, Idaho. They raised 6 children: Sandra, Steve, Dave, Mike, Lori and Lisa. They were joined eternally in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 23, 1962 and celebrated their 60th anniversary earlier this year together with friends and family.
They have 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jack loved to play cards and taught many of his children and grandchildren to play solitaire, gin-rummy and black jack throughout the years. During the holidays, there was always a game to be had at the kitchen table. He also loved to spend time outdoor and enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, taking care of his garden and yard. Over the years, he spent much of his time watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, choir and various school or church events.
As a long-time member of the LDS Church, Jack has held many positions, including bishopric, Elders Quorum, Sunday School Presidency, coaching the boys' basketball team, Young Men's' and the Scouting program. He loved working with youth and spending time with his own sons and daughters as well as their friends. He especially enjoyed taking part in various roles in the Boy and Girl Scout Camp.
In the early nineties, Jack and Hattie served a mission in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dad always looked back on this time as a high point in his life. They served a mission in the Idaho Falls Temple for seven years until health issues with Mom forced them to stay closer to home. For many years, he has worked in the Stake Genealogy Center on the extraction program. He was very proud of the work that he did in this program although later in life he had a bit of a problem with the small type.
Jack is survived by his wife, Hattie, their family; Sandra (Larry) Hirschi; Steve (Pam) Landon; Dave (Shauna) Landon; Mike (Stacey) Landon; Lori (Blair) Gilbert; Lisa (Cody) Barfuss; 37 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Eldora; his three older brothers, Max, Reed, and Ronald.
Dad, we love you and we miss you.
