Amarillo, Texas- Gilbert Rex Lish, 73, formerly of Pocatello passed away early Sunday morning October 23, 2011 at his home in Amarillo, Texas following an illness. He was born Sept. 22, 1938 in Pocatello, Idaho.
He attended schools in Pocatello, Idaho including Pocatello High School. He enlisted in the U.S. army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. After his service to his country was over he worked full time for Standard Oil of California and began attending Sacramento Community College at night to begin his college education. He attended Idaho State University full time where he received his Bachelor ' s and Master ' s Degrees in accounting . He then went to the University of Kentucky where he received his Doctorate Degree in Accounting.
His new found love of teaching took him to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he taught accounting for 10 years.
During his time in Las Cruces he purchased real estate rentals and discovered he enjoyed dealing in real estate, so he studied and became a licensed real estate broker in New Mexico where he managed and sold his own properties and some for others. He taught part time at Texas Tech University and then later moved to Amarillo, Texas where he was involved in long horn cattle ranching and quarter horse racing. His horses ran at tracks through out Texas and New Mexico including Ruidoso Downs.
He is survived by his son , Gilbert Rex (Kimberly ) Lish, Elko, Nevada; two daughters, Cheryl Ann (Greg) Rosa, Pocatello, Idaho; Vickie Lynn Lish, Boise, Idaho; 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Juanita Stovall, Las Cruces, NM and Bonnie Bogar, Grand Junction, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert M. and Vada A. Lish, his mother Mary Louise, brother, Cecil "Bud" Lish, sister, Ester Denny and one great grandson, Braedon Rosa.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 at 11:00 am at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
