Dwight Lewis Zundel

Pocatello - Dwight L. Zundel, 87, longtime Pocatello resident and former business owner of Zundel's Radio, passed away Monday, March 16, 2009 at his son's home in Farmington, Utah.

Dwight was born the February 18, 1922 in Malad, Idaho. He was the oldest of 10 children. However he grew up on a small farm north of Pocatello. He attended school in Pocatello and always was interested in electronics and radio. He graduated from Pocatello High School and was involved with electronics and archery clubs. He attended Idaho State University and entered the Navy in 1942. While in the Navy he was a radio man and they would place him on Islands in the South Pacific and he would install radio relay stations for the US Armed Forces during WWII.

He married his High School sweet heart Betty J. Zundel, October 2, 1943 in San Francisco, Ca while on leave. They were later married in the Logan Temple on February 7, 1944. The had four children: Erwin, Karen, Deanna and Elton.

Dwight was a long time businessman in Pocatello starting his first business Zundel Appliances in 1946. Later the business became known as Zundel's Radio as he was the first business to sell and service televisions in Southern Idaho. He held his electronic engineers license and helped many of the radio stations get started in Southern Idaho and Northern Utah. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and worked with and in the Alameda Chamber of Commerce.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints serving in several positions. Those included: Young Men's, the Bishopric and Branch President of the Bannock Creek Branch. He served in the community and was a great friend and advocate for the local Indian Tribe.

He is survived by his wife Betty Jean Zundel, three brothers Voyd, Reed, and Wayne Zundel and one sister Elaine Nelson. Also his four children Erwin (Karen) Zundel, Karen (Dennis) Thurston, Deanna (David) Long, and Elton (Carene) Zundel. There are 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the Pocatello LDS 18th Ward Chapel (344 Hawthorne Rd) on Saturday March 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Rojelio Campos officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday March 20, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel 510 N. 12th Ave and on Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
