Pocatello-Donald Dayton Green, 81, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 from mesothelioma.
Don was born December 27, 1929 in Pocatello, Idaho, the son of Jesse and Minnie Green. He was raised in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School. He married Donna Lou Dunn on April 12, 1951 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They had five children: David, DeeAnn, Alan, Debbie and Lisa, who were raised in Pocatello.
Don worked on the railroad as a crew caller during high school, then served an apprenticeship as a sign painter at Markham Advertising. He worked with his brothers in the painting business, then at Thiokol gun plant in Pocatello during the Vietnam War. In 1966, he began working at the INEL in Arco, Idaho as a painter. In 1972, he moved to the sign shop where he designed and painted many signs throughout their facilities. He retired from the INEL contractor EG&G Inc. after 25 years of service in 1991.
Don served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Scout master, ward clerk, Sunday School president and home teacher. He could always be found helping others. He was a very compassionate person, and loved visiting with friends and family.
He loved art, and helped design and build many July 24th floats, roadshow scenery, and painted scenes for various occasions.
He enjoyed camping with his family and fishing with his grandchildren. He took great pleasure in going on family vacations to Island Park for boating or snowmobiling, as well as Disneyland and many other places.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Green: his children, David (Barbara) Green, of Powell, Wyoming; DeeAnn (Bill) Donahey of Chubbuck, Idaho; Alan (Debra) Green of Pocatello, Idaho; Debbie Green of Twin Falls, Idaho; Lisa Cox of Draper, Utah; 17 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; two brothers, Loyal (Venna) Green, California; Joe (Ruth) Green, Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Maxine Olsen, California;
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Maurice Green and Jesse Grant Green; 2 sisters, Lois Hall and Rosetta Warth.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the L.D.S. Chapel (300 East Chapel Street) with Bishop Michael Morrissey of the Holman Ward officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and on Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Norton Cemetery, McCammon, Idaho.
