Donald “Don” Andrew Aslett, 89 of McCammon, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his apartment at his Museum of Clean in Pocatello, Idaho on Thursday, August 21, 2024. Don had been valiantly fighting Multiple Myeloma and Parkinson’s over the past several years and, most recently, a stroke. His health concerns did not stop him from greeting and giving museum tours, which he continued until just a few weeks before his passing.
Don was born July 23, 1935 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Duane and Opal Ross Aslett. He was the second of five children (Shirley (Gene Kisling), Larry(LaDonna), Rick(Linda), and Devon(Myrna)). Opal and Duane chose farm life for their family; they bought a farm in Dietrich, Idaho where Don learned his marveled work ethic.
Don first ventured out serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Hawaiian Islands. After returning, he landed at Idaho State University in Pocatello where he immersed himself in studies, sports (lettering on the baseball team) and business. He started his famed cleaning business, Varsity Contractors, during his college years, initiating a lifetime of entrepreneurship. Don met Barbara Mae Morris at a church youth activity. Don later said “I’d heard scores of ‘that’s the girl I’m going to marry’ stories and did indeed suddenly have that feeling about her. It was an impression that never left me...(no one had) touched my spirit like this”. Don and Barbara were married in the Idaho Falls temple on December 27, 1957. Barbara and Don’s six children (Laura, Karla, Grant, Liz, Rell and Cindy) were born within the next seven years.
Don’s life was full of service and entrepreneurial successes. He always went the extra mile in every endeavor, whether it was as a little league coach or scout master. He mentored many scouts that earned Eagle Scout status and took several groups to national Scout Jamborees. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, one of the highest awards in scouting service. He served in many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Bishop in the Sun Valley Idaho ward, High Counselor in the McCammon Stake, and Church Public Relations Correspondent. He was a favorite speaker at graduations, conventions and community events. One of his big service highlights was serving a senior mission with Barbara in Boston, Massachusetts
His business accomplishments are many; his college cleaning business grew to become Varsity Contractors, one of the most respected national cleaning companies in the nation. His love for cleaning prompted him to share his professional cleaning expertise in creative ways, which resulted in him becoming a sought-after expert. He was a guest on Good Morning America, the Today show, Regis, and Oprah. He wrote 40 best-selling books and did presentations around the globe. He was known as the “Latrine King,” and helped those he inspired to save millions of hours in housework. In the professional cleaning industry, he was an icon, speaking and training thousands. He was best known for championing the janitor: many still remember him carrying his toilet suitcase around the airport as a proud toilet cleaner.
Don fostered a culture of work ethic, service, creativity, and caring for others through his projects on the McCammon property. Grandchildren remember picking rocks from fields, planting the garden, and exploring his shop. Don and Barbara bravely took groups of their 8-year-old grandkids (many taking their first airplane ride) to their property in Kauai where Don once worked as a missionary.
Don loved giving his grandchildren a memorable Kauai experience. He was proud of the home he built there, which is now shared by the family for generations of connections and memories.
His final legacy project is his Museum of Clean housed in a beautiful historic building that he renovated in Pocatello, Idaho. The museum has become an iconic Pocatello landmark and attracts visitors from across the globe. The museum has become a special place for the community; many have had the unforgettable experience of getting a tour from Don that included him giving them a signed book.
Don is survived by his six children. Laura (Rob) Bountiful Ut, Karla (Duff) Skagway AK, Grant (Margie) North Salt Lake, UT, Liz (Marty) Kaysville, UT, Cindy (Dee) Rosevelt, UT, Rell Pocatello, ID, Brother Devon (Myrna) Shoshone, ID, 20 Grand Children, 25 Great Grand Children. Predeceased spouse Barbara Aslett, grandson Jacob Simons, parents Duane & Opel, siblings Shirely, Larry, and Rick.
Funeral services for Don will be held on Saturday Aug. 31, 2024 at 11am in the McCammon LDS Stake Center (403 W 16th St, McCammon, ID). The family will receive friends on Friday Aug. 30, 2024 from 6-8pm at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Home (510 N. 12th Ave. Pocatello, ID) and on Saturday prior to services from 9:30-10:45am at the church.
