Pocatello-Coey Daniel Richards, 85, of Pocatello, Idaho returned to our Father In Heaven May 7, 2009, following a lingering illness.
He was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Montpelier, Idaho, the son of Daniel Brigham and Frances Helena Richards.
Coey's father worked for the railroad therefore the family moved quite often. He attended many different schools. His parents final move was to Nampa, Idaho, where Coey graduated from high school. After graduation, he went into the Army and served in World War II . He did work in deciphering codes. He served in many places but was mostly in the Philippines. After the war,he attended BYU and graduated in Sociology in 1951.
During his college years, he met and married Reva Lucille Paulsen in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity on Sept. 20, 1949. Coey and Reva had their first child, a daughter while still in college.
Coey worked for Taylor Brothers Furniture while attending school. The low commission pay led Coey to search for other jobs. His father found him a surveying job on the railroad. The railroad was in his blood and he worked for 30 plus years there until his retirement in 1985. They moved to Pocatello in Feb. 1963.
He was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was Elders Quorum President, Councilor in the Bishopric, Vice President at the Saint Anthony Branch, on the High Council and High Priest President twice. Coey's highlight was serving a two year mission in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife from 1994 to 1995 and serving as an officiator in the Idaho Falls Temple for many years.
Coey is survived by his wife, Reva, Pocatello; 1 son, Dr. Drew Daniel (Christine Komoda) Richards of Lakewood, Colorado; 3 daughters, Sheila Darlene (Randy Connell) Lowe of West Point, Utah; Sheryl Kaye Richards, Pocatello; Shannon Lynn (Dean Roger) Harmon, Highland, Utah. 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Glenalee Nichols; 3 sister-in-laws, Mabel Ellen Mortensen, Geri Lukehart, and Claudia Paulsen; two brothers-in-laws, Weldon Paulsen, Tim Lukehart. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Dian; 2 brother-in-laws, Gus Nichols, Bob Frank; 1 daughter, Sandra Scott; 1 great grandchild. Bella Anne Hanson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pocatello Idaho L.D.S. East Stake Center (42 Princeton) with Bishop Lee Reddish, of the Pocatello 6th Ward officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and on Tuesday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Mountainview Cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
Funeral services are under the care of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
