Pocatello-Claude K. Roberts, 87, of Pocatello passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at a local assisted living center of natural causes where he had been living for the past several years.
He was born November 21, 1920 in Red Mesa, Colorado, one of fifteen children to Orval and Persis Young Roberts. As a young man, he attended schools in near by Marvel, Colorado. He joined the U. S. Navy when he was 17 years old and served in the South Pacific. He was already in the Navy when Pearl Harbor was attacked and continued to serve during World War II and was discharged after 8 years of service in 1945. Following his discharge, he met Doris Slade Tooley. They were married February 14, 1946 in Gallup, Mexico. Doris passed away on September 29, 2002.
Claude was part owner of a coal mine in Colorado and also raised chickens commercially. He and Doris moved to Hawthorne, Nevada in 1951 where he worked for the U. S. Postal service and retired as assistant Post Master in 1976. He and Doris moved to Pocatello in 1977 to be closer to family and lived South of Pocatello on Mink Creek Road for many years.
He was active in the L.D.S. Church serving in various callings including working the into Idaho Falls Temple. He also very much enjoyed working in he name extraction program which he did for may years.
Survivors include: a step-daughter, Marvene(David) Chandler, West Jordan, Utah; 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris, 14 siblings and a grandson, Scott Colley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave with Bishop Efrain Velasquez of the Mink Creek Ward officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with military rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. The family will meet with friends on Saturday one hour prior to services.
