Caroline Joyce Bell Stone Pocatello- C. Joyce Stone, 74, peacefully slipped away Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls surrounded by the comfort and support of her loving family. She battled various medical problems in the final years of her life but her passing was unexpected after suffering a stroke at the age of 74.
She was born February 19, 1933 in Lava Hot Springs area, the daughter of Earl Rederick and Sarah Vesta Jones Bell. She grew up on a farm with nine brothers and sisters. She graduated from Lava High School in 1951, the last graduating class. Dividing her years in Lava, Joyce worked at the drug store, as a lifeguard and on her family's farm.
She married Gary Stone on Nov. 22, 1953 in Lava Hot Springs and moved to Pocatello, where she raised her two children, Scott Stone (1954) and Cara Lewis (1958) .
After a period of waitressing and being a sales clerk, Joyce used her education and sharp wit to develop a long career and break unparalleled ground in the engineering department of Mountain Bell, which became USWEST then Qwest. She retired from the company after her successful career working full-time as a single mother for more than 25 years. Joyce was an active member in the LDS Church and served as a librarian at the Cedar First War. She enjoyed shopping with her sisters, traveling the United States, reading good books and spending time with her grandchildren. Her family remembers her strong work ethic, sense of humor, sweet smile and famous "Grammy potatoes" that were present at every holiday. And although her physical body is at rest, her spirit, memories and potatoes will always be with her family.
She is survived by her son, Scott (Deb) Stone, Pocatello, Idaho; a daughter, Cara (Stephen) Lewis, Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren, Shane, Mackenzie; step-grandchildren, Stephanie, Ashley, and Ian; brothers, Fred T. (Rea) Bell; Richard (Sharon) Bell; sisters, Barbara Christensen, Kay Brower, Neva (Tommy) Wellard, Judy Scott; sister-in-law, Muriel Bell; half-brother, Wayne Elwell; Loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Earl and Vesta; sisters, Rhoda Rich (Joe) and June Fowler (Dale), brother Leonard Bell; brothers-in-laws, Dell Brower and Marvin Christensen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday March 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cedar 1st Ward Chapel (550 W. Cedar) with Bishop Stuart E. Wray officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Lava Hot Springs Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
