Arthur Phillips Lloyd, Sr. passed away on June 23, 2024 in Pocatello, Idaho surrounded by loved ones. He was born on August 30, 1938 in New London, Connecticut to Lois and Kenneth Lloyd.
Arthur shared his life with two younger brothers—Tom and Frank. He spent his early years in Groton, Connecticut before the family moved to Independence, Missouri. He was a lifelong member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ). He attended school in Independence, MO, graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1956. Arthur attended Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa; graduating from the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg (BS History/Sociology) and MS in Counseling and earned a PhD in Counselor Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie (1962-64).
Arthur had various jobs growing up including helping with milk deliveries, cleaning houses for neighbors, collecting scrap metal and newspapers after World War II, setting pins by hand at a bowling alley, operating the address-o-graph machine for a newspaper, selling clothes at a department store, and periodically helped his Uncle Zygmund at the Elko Camera store. In high school, Arthur worked for his dad (a masonry contractor) as a hod carrier and general laborer.
Summers were spent as a cannery foreman in Oregon at Rogers Canning Company and fighting forest fires after the canning season to earn money for college. Upon graduation, he taught counseling at both Montana State University, Bozeman, and Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Arthur came to Idaho State University, Pocatello, in 1967 to design and implement a Counselor Education graduate program and chaired the department from 1968-1996. He served as acting Dean of the College of Education, was the recipient of 2 Fulbright awards to Malaysia, and received several sabbatical leaves to study counseling, first in England and then Malaysia.
Arthur met Marcia Lou Kemp in the fall of 1959 at college in Warrensburg, Missouri. They were married on August 6, 1960, in Denver, Colorado and set off on their life travels that extended to national and international destinations (about 50 countries) for at least 60 years. Their two children Lisa, born in 1966, and Arthur Jr., born in 1968, accompanied their parents on world travels. Arthur and Marcia both retired from ISU in 2001 and increased their international travels until 2020.
Arthur was active in many professional organizations including the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) (national, regional, and state), the American College Personnel Association, American Psychological Association, and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. He received numerous awards, among them were both the Distinguished Mentor (2001-2002) and the Professional Leadership Award (1993) from ACES; Idaho Association for Counseling and Development Distinguished Service Award (1986); and the Idaho State University Master Teacher (1984). Arthur was a member of the collegiate fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma, Alpha Chapter, at the University of Central Missouri (1957).
Arthur served as the first Chairman of the Idaho Counselor Licensing Board (1982-84) and was Licensed Counselor (Idaho #1). As a Licensed Psychologist he was #40 in Idaho from 1972 and was a member of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC #306) from 1983. He published numerous counseling articles in state, national, and international journals. He wrote many articles for Malaysian counseling journals and book chapters. Arthur co-wrote a book, Guidance and Counseling in Education, with a Malaysian colleague who translated the work into the Malay language. One of Arthur’s Fulbright projects in 1989 was creating the Malaysian index of educational journals from 1958-1987, published by the University of Malaya.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Kenneth Lloyd; a son, Arthur Jr.; and a nephew, Charlie. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; daughter, Lisa (Paul); grandsons, Sam and Jackson; brothers, Frank (Linda), Tom (Charlene); nieces (Kelly, Mindy, and Crandall); and nephews (Korey and David).
